Another bridge in Harlan County that is being replaced by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will be completed this spring. The bridge carries Britton Creek Road over Britton Creek. KYTC began construction on this project in early November.
The Britton Creek Road bridge was built in 1965, having served the Harlan County community for 55 years. Replacing this bridge will add 75 years of life to the bridge, ensuring that it is safer, up-to-date, and free of weight restrictions for Eastern Kentucky drivers.
The Harlan County bridge replacement is part of an innovative design-build project that will restore more than 100 bridges in the region under one contract. A Kentucky-based, design-build team that includes Central Bridge Company/Bizzack Construction Joint Venture and HDR Inc. was awarded the project in late 2019.
The design-build project is part of the state’s Bridging Kentucky Program — a statewide initiative that represents an unprecedented commitment by the Commonwealth to improve the safety and soundness of bridges across Kentucky.
